Marshmallow (khatmi) is a tall garden plant with velvety leaves and pale pink flowers; the root is what the Attari sells.

The classical demulcent (coats and soothes irritated tissue) is a raw scratchy throat and an irritated gastric lining calmed by the same soft root gel.

Cool-water maceration (soaked to draw out the flavour), never a hot infusion (a drink made by steeping the plant in hot water), preserves the mucilage — the gel is the medicine.

Space by 30–60 min from oral medications — the mucilage (a soft, slippery plant gel) can slow absorption.

Different plant from the modern confectionery marshmallow — the sweet has no medicinal root in it.
